How to Soundproof a Wall Between Terraced Houses: A Straight Answer From the Contractors Who Do It

Terraced houses are one of the most common housing types in the UK, and they are also one of the most common reasons people call Pinnacle Sound. The party wall between you and next door is the single biggest source of noise in most terraces, and the truth is that even the best built Victorian and Edwardian terraces were never designed with modern life in mind. Add in a century of alterations, dot and dab plasterboard, and neighbours who spend more time at home than they used to, and the wall that once felt fine can start to feel like tissue paper. This post is a straight answer on how to soundproof a wall between terraced houses, what actually works, and what will just cost you money without solving the problem.
Why Terraced House Walls Let So Much Sound Through
Most UK terraces were built between roughly 1850 and 1930, and the party walls in them were usually a single skin of solid brick, sometimes a brick and a half thick. In acoustic terms, solid masonry is not a bad start. It has mass, it has density, and if it has been left alone, it does a reasonable job of blocking airborne sound.
The problem is that very few terraced party walls have actually been left alone. Over decades, walls have been re-plastered, had chimneys removed, had cables and pipes chased into them, had sockets fitted back to back with the neighbour's sockets, and (most commonly) had modern dot and dab plasterboard applied over the top. Every one of those changes creates a new route for sound to travel, and most of them are hidden behind decorative finishes so you cannot see what is going on.
On top of that, terraces share floors and ceilings with the properties on either side through timber joists that often run continuously from one house into the next. Sound travelling into the joist ends in your neighbour's house can quite happily radiate out into your bedroom. This is what acousticians call a flanking path, and it is one of the main reasons some homeowners spend a fortune on the party wall itself and are disappointed by the result.
Understanding all of this matters, because working out how to soundproof a wall between terraced houses starts with knowing what you are actually dealing with. Guessing tends to be expensive.
What Does Not Work (and What You Should Not Waste Money On)

Before getting to the solutions, it is worth naming the fixes we see homeowners try first that almost always disappoint.
Egg crate acoustic foam. This is designed to absorb sound reflections inside a room, such as in a recording studio. It does effectively nothing to block airborne noise coming through a party wall. Sticking it on the wall makes you feel like you have done something. It does not stop your neighbour's television.
Thicker paint or "acoustic" paint. No paint has enough mass to reduce airborne sound transmission by an amount you would notice. This one is marketing, not physics.
A single extra layer of standard plasterboard screwed onto the existing wall. Mass alone does not solve the problem, and rigid connections mean the sound bypasses the added layer entirely. You end up with a slightly heavier wall and roughly the same amount of noise.
Bookshelves and thick curtains. These absorb high frequencies within your own room. They do not stop noise coming through the wall.
Foam or fibre stuffed into the cavity behind dot and dab. Occasionally sold as a quick fix. It reduces the drum effect of the trapped air cavity slightly, but leaves the underlying flanking issues untouched.
None of these are dishonest products in themselves. They are just aimed at the wrong problem, and if your objective is to stop hearing your neighbours, none of them will get you there.
What Actually Works: The Independent Stud Wall System

The most reliable answer to how to soundproof a wall between terraced houses is a decoupled independent wall system built inside your room, in front of the existing party wall. It is more work than sticking panels on the wall, but it is the only approach that consistently delivers a genuine reduction in noise.
The build up works on four principles working together.
Decoupling comes first. Any dot and dab plasterboard is stripped back to the underlying brick. A new metal or timber stud frame is then built in front of the party wall, either fully independent of it or connected via resilient isolation clips. The point is that the surface you look at is no longer rigidly attached to the wall your neighbour lives against.
Absorption goes into the cavity next. Acoustic mineral wool of a specified density fills the gap between the studs, soaking up the sound energy that would otherwise resonate inside the void.
Mass is added in the form of two layers of high density acoustic plasterboard fixed to the new stud frame. Mass on its own is not enough, but mass properly decoupled is what stops the airborne sound getting through.
Damping finishes the system. A damping compound applied between the plasterboard layers turns residual vibration into a small amount of heat, killing the resonance that would otherwise let the new wall behave like a drum.
Done properly, this system takes 75mm to 125mm off the width of the room, depending on the isolation method and how bad the noise is. That is the honest trade off. Most clients decide the loss of a few inches is a very fair price for finally not hearing their neighbours.
The Flanking Paths That Catch People Out
Even a properly built independent wall will underperform if the flanking paths have not been addressed. This is the single most common reason we get called in to fix somebody else's work.
The main culprits are the floor joists running through into next door, the ceiling void above the party wall, the chimney breast if one exists, and any sockets or service penetrations. On a properly specified job, each of these gets treated in the appropriate way. Sometimes that means acoustic sealing at the wall to ceiling and wall to floor junctions. Sometimes it means treating a strip of ceiling adjacent to the party wall. Sometimes it means separating back to back sockets or moving them. On chimney breasts, it often means treating the breast and the reveals rather than just the flat wall around it.
Skipping any of this is where most disappointing outcomes come from. You do not need to treat every possible route, but you do need to treat the ones that matter for your specific property. That is what a survey is for.
The Realistic Timeline
Timeline wise, a single party wall usually takes between one and three weeks, including making good the finishes so the room is ready to redecorate. The room is out of use during that time. It is dusty, disruptive work, but it has a clear end point, and clients almost always tell us the difference is night and day.
The DIY Question
Every so often we get asked whether this kind of work can be done by a competent DIYer. The honest answer is that the physical carpentry and plastering side of it is within reach for the right person. The acoustic diagnosis, product specification and flanking treatment are where most DIY jobs fall short. If you are confident on the tools but not on the acoustics, one option is to pay for a proper survey and specification from a soundproofing contractor and then do some or all of the labour yourself. That way the design is right, even if the execution is your own.
The one thing we would say is do not follow generic YouTube videos to buy your materials. Every terrace is different, and a product that works brilliantly in one wall may be actively wrong for another.
